The Kim Young-Jung lectures was founded in 2011 by fellow scholars in memory of Prof. Kim Young-Jung, who was a distinguished scholar and member of the SNU Department of Philosophy since 2006, and had been actively engaging and contributing to the Korean academia with renowned expertise in the areas of the philosophy of mind and cognitive science. He was also a proactive faculty member, serving as the Dean of the SNU Admissions Office.
His unexpected loss in 2009 was grievous news for the entire SNU community. The Kim Young-Jung lectures was founded in 2011 by fellow scholars to commemorate Prof. Kim, and has since been the biggest annual event in the Department of Philosophy, providing chances for the students and faculty to invite and learn from world-renowned scholars.
A list of past lecturers:
2011 - Jaegwon Kim (Brown)
2012 - Philip Kitcher and Patricia Kitcher (Columbia)
2013 - Timothy Williamson (Oxford)
2014 - Ned Block (NYU)
2015 - Tyler Burge (UCLA)
This year, Prof. John Broom (Oxford) will be talking about his views on normativity and rationality, as portrayed in his book Rationality Through Reasoning.
Below is the outline of the lectures that will take place for three days.
"Philosophers often confuse rationality with normativity, or at least they do not draw the distinction between rationality and normativity as sharply as they should. These lectures aim to draw the distinction, and then to consider exactly what is the relationship between the two."
Lecture 1: Normativity Versus Rationality (Tue, 28th Nov. 17:00-19:00)
Lecture 2: Normativity (Wed, 29th Nov. 17:00-19:00)
Lecture 3: Rationality (Thur, 30th Nov. 15:00-16:30, followed by discussion seminar: 17:00-19:00)
