Contesting Boundaries. Understanding our Increasingly Complex World

The theory and practice of politics and international relations is becoming increasingly complex.

Boundaries are being challenged conceptually and physically within and between states. Globalisation is leading some states to soften borders and move toward greater multilateralism while others are going in the opposite direction.

There is also a shift within the study of Politics from a purely state-centric conception of politics towards topics like the role of emotions and well-being. Even the move toward more mixed methods research is challenging the boundary between quantitative and qualitative methods. These complexities have caused a move towards more interdisciplinary research as scholars seek answers to the challenging questions in domestic and international politics. These changes provide opportunities for innovative approaches to research from a wide variety of fields.

We welcome abstracts from postgraduates and early career researchers across and between disciplines which attempt to tackle some of these issues to contribute to a conference to be held on June 21st 2018 at the University of Nottingham

We especially welcome proposals that fit into one of these streams:

  • International Relations
  • Political theory, including critical and normative
  • Global and Human Security
  • European and comparative politics
  • Public opinion and populism
  • Law and governance
  • Diplomacy

Please include a title, a c. 250 word abstract, your name, institutional affiliation, and proposed stream, and send it to [email protected] by April 13th, 2018. Applicants will be informed of final decisions by May 1st, 2018 at the latest. We will respond to all applicants.
