The Revista Portuguesa de Filosofia will publish in October 2018 a thematic issue dedicated to Philosophy of Music.

We find, from Antiquity, tensions and distensions between music and philosophy that show the essential duality and the intrinsically relational character of music, while convoking in philosophy the challenge of capturingthat singularity that sounds whose form escapes in the passing of time, metaphor itself of the human condition. In those tensions and distensions are conjugatenature and intelligibility, rhythm and emotion, number and interiority, perception and construction, harmony and process, word and sound, abstraction and feeling. And in such tensions and distensions arise - from ancestral traditions of Mesopotamia  or pythagorical schools to Nietzsche, Deleuze or some recent approaches related to meaning or musical ontology- archetypicalfigures of thought, [figures] already unfailingly united to music: inaudible sonorous order of the cosmos, sonorous objectification of the affections, hidden arithmetic exercise, beating rhythm of nature, hidden metaphysical exercise,  ethosof the soul, genesis of non-pulsed times...

This thematic volume aims to bring together scholars with different philosophical, artistic and scientific backgrounds in order to analyze from different perspectives this mutual and essential belonging between philosophy and music, so essential that it allows us to situate ourselves in its intersection, as a philosophy of music. Authors are invited to submit their papers in any area within the proposed horizon. Approaches may take many different perspectives, coming from different philosophical traditions or contexts, from Western thought to non Western approaches, and dealing with both diachronic / historical aspects and thematic questions.
