Lessons Learned from the Dissolution of and Secession from Political Unions

The twelfth International Graduate Legal Research Conference will take place on 24th April 2018 at King’s College London. The conference gives graduate students and academics early in their careers a unique opportunity to engage with the academic community, to discuss their work with other researchers in their fields, and to receive feedback from eminent scholars and practitioners. A selection of the best papers will also be published in a following edition of the King’s Student Law Review.

Topic

The news is filled with public debate about international organisations, national alliances and nation states dissolving. Brexit is just one example of this phenomenon. This conference focuses on the lessons to be learned from experiences of past dissolutions and secessions applicable today. Specific modern examples of where these lessons may be applied include (but are not limited to) Brexit, Catalonian independence, the Scottish referendum, Kurdish independence, South Sudan, the US’s withdrawal from the Transpacific Partnership, the denunciation of ICSID Convention by some South American states, and the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Participants are invited to reflect on any moral, political, social, legal, or economic aspect of the dissolution of and secession from political unions, and to draw conclusions relevant to some contentious modern day events.

Abstracts

Abstracts should be no longer than 500 words in length. Please note that submissions should be sent to [email protected]. The subject of the e-mail must be IGLRC 2018. Finally, please be aware that submissions from applicants without a valid university or institution email address will be rejected.

The closing date for receipt of abstracts is 14th February 2018. Successful applicants will be informed by 20th February 2018. The authors of abstracts selected for presentation will be expected to submit completed papers (maximum length 6,000 words) by 9th April 2018.

Conference presenters will be grouped into subject-based panels within which each panellist will be presenting their paper. Shortly after April 9th, panellists will be notified in which panel they have been placed, and will receive a copy of their co-panellists’ papers.
