“The Ethics of Conduct in Debate” University of Tartu Graduate Conference 2018

Debate is not just an exchange of propositions. It’s an exchange that happens between people with different conceptions of themselves and others, and with different levels of influence. Whether in politics, science, or society at large, the effectiveness of debate is shaped by how participants conduct themselves. On October 19th and 20th 2018, the Department of Philosophy at the University of Tartu will be hosting a graduate conference on the ethics of conduct in debate. Topics may include or address, but are not limited to:

  • Role of the public in professional debates

  • Echo chambers

  • Speaking for others in debate

  • Fair and unfair debates

  • Diversity of viewpoints in debate

  • “No-Platforming” and free speech

  • Philosophers and their responsibility in public debates

Call For Abstracts

We welcome submissions for 30-minute presentations, followed by 30 minutes for discussion. We are accepting submissions from both Master’s level and PhD level students. All abstracts will be reviewed anonymously. Please provide both short (150 words) and long form abstracts (800-1000 words), and ensure they are prepared for anonymous review. Some travel and accommodation stipends will be made available to authors of successful abstracts. The exact number and size of these stipends is yet to be determined, pending funding decisions.
