Details

The goal of the Philosophy Beyond Philosophers workshop is to undertake the first systematic evaluation of the relationship of early Greek philosophy to texts outside of canonical “philosophical” treatises. We aim to break down the traditional boundaries separating philosophy and literature by exploring philosophical language, themes, and content in a wide variety of genres – epic, lyric, tragedy, comedy, historiography, rhetoric, and medical treatises – ranging from the sixth to the early fourth centuries BCE. This interdisciplinary project will have the benefit of bringing together scholars often artificially kept separate in Classics and Ancient Philosophy departments.

Organizers: Scarlett Kingsley, Classics, Agnes Scott College

Harald Thorsrud, Philosophy, Agnes Scott College

            Joshua Billings, Classics, Princeton University
