Derek Parfit was "thought by many to be the most original moral philosopher in the English-speaking world" (The New Yorker). This conference will bring together many of his friends and colleagues, and other leading moral philosophers working on Parfitian topics, in order to honor his memory and make progress on those questions he believed matter most. The conference will be held at the University of Oxford, at which Parfit spent his entire academic career. It is supported by the Faculty of Philosophy at Oxford and by All Souls College. Speakers will include Frances Kamm, John Broome, Ruth Chang, Janet Radcliffe-Richards, Brad Hooker, Roger Crisp, Ingmar Persson, Michael Otsuka, Elizabeth Ashford, Tim Campbell, Rahul Kumar, Ralf Bader, Jimmy Goodrich, Nils Holtug, Theron Pummer, Patrick Tomlin, Julian Savulescu, William MacAskill, Simon Beard, Andreas Mogensen, Wlodek Rabinowicz, Kasper Lippert-Rasmussen, Teru Thomas, and Melinda Roberts. Jeff McMahan, White's Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Oxford and an organizer of the conference, will deliver opening remarks.
The conference will be held at the Gulbenkian Lecture Theatre in the St Cross Building on St Cross Road. It is free and open to all, but advance registration is required. We highly recommend registering as early as possible, since space may be limited.
