CFP: The Ethics of Public Discourse

“The Ethics of Public Discourse”

April 5-6, 2019

Bowling Green State University

Keynote speakers: Julia Driver (Washington University, St. Louis) and Jason Stanley (Yale University)

How should we communicate with others in the public square about moral and political issues? We invite submissions addressing this question, broadly construed. We will accept eight papers for presentation. Potential topics include, but are not limited to: 

·     Public blaming and shaming

·     Slurs, derogation, insults

·     The meaning and moral force of moral and political slogans

·     Political messaging

·     Propaganda

·     Grandstanding and virtue signaling

·     Complaining

·     Moralizing 

·     Public moral emotions 

·     Social media and fake news

·     Free speech on campus

·     Dog whistles and other indirect speech

·     Lying in politics

·     Public discourse and civic virtue

·     The moral aims of public discourse

·     Public discourse and issues of respect

Those interested in presenting a paper are invited to submit a 750-word abstract by Dec. 10, 2018. 

Only one submission per person is permitted. Abstracts will be evaluated by a program committee and decisions will be made in January, 2019. Please include name and institutional affiliation in  abstract.
