CFP: The Acorn: Philosophical Studies in Pacifism and Nonviolence

Submission deadline: January 15, 2019

Details

The year 2019 marks the 120 year anniversary of the birth of Howard Washington Thurman and the 70th anniversary of his seminal publication, Jesus and the Disinherited. It is sad to say; however, that even with such an enormous passage of time, few philosophical analyses have been performed on his work and fewer still critical interrogations of the work of others or of societal problems have been performed using Thurman’s reflections, ideals, or frameworks as a guidepost.

In observance of these milestones pertaining to the study of Thurman, we invite you to submit original research papers to be published in special issue of the Acorn. The Acorn is a peer-reviewed, scholarly journal devoted to the philosophical examination of the theory and practice of activism, nonviolence, organizing, pacifism, and resistance, especially related to examples such as M. K. Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Cesar Chavez, or Jane Addams.

In this special issue, the ideas of Howard Thurman will be used for the subject matter, as presented in his many writings, speeches, and sermons. Thurman’s intentions for his writings was that they would be read and implemented to this extent, but he also wanted them to be the center of discussions aimed at creating the good community. To this end, several questions or ideas should be used to guide these writings but the writers will be free to explore other concepts portrayed either explicitly or implicitly in the work of Thurman. These concepts are as follows:

* Thurman’s pacifism vs. King’s nonviolence

* Thurman as the product of a non-Christian black humanistic ideal

* Thurman’s attitude toward violence as a critique on the American humanistic Ideal

* Thurman’s prognosis for black lives

* Why common ground matters

* Resistence, Fear, and Death and the Thurman response to violence.

Submissions should be made electronically to Dr. Anthony Sean Neal, Guest Editor, [email protected]. An abstract with approximately 250 words should accompany the submission. The deadline for the upcoming special Thurman issue is January 15, 2019.
