Topic areas

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Marist College will host the Ninth Mid-Hudson Valley Undergraduate Philosophy Conference 5-6 April 2019. Undergraduates are encouraged to submit papers on any topic in philosophy. The conference is selective, accepting at most six papers. There are no concurrent presentations. Each paper presentation includes comments from another undergraduate from either Marist College's philosophy program or from one of the other philosophy programs at four other colleges in the Mid-Hudson Valley Region of Upstate New York.

Papers accepted for presentation are eligible for consideration for publication in the sixth volume of the annual Marist Undergraduate Philosophy Journal.

The keynote speaker this year will be Paul C. Taylor. Professor Taylor is the W. Alton Jones Professor of Philosophy at Vanderbilt University. He specializes in Race Theory, Aesthetics, American Pragmatism, Social and Political Philosophy, and Africana Philosophy. He was awarded the American Society for Aesthetics Outstanding Monograph Prize in 2017 for his book, Black is Beautiful: A Philosophy of Black Aesthetics (Blackwell, 2017). He has also authored two other books, Race: A Philosophical Introduction (Polity-Blackwell, 2004) and On Obama (Routledge, 2016). He also edited The Philosophy of Race (Routledge, 2012) and, with Linda Martín Alcoff and Luvell Anderson, he co-edited The Routledge Companion to the Philosophy of Race (Routledge, 2017). He is presently working on a monograph for Oxford University Press entitled Uneasy Sanctuary: Rethinking Race-Thinking.
