CFA: Logic Rulez!? – A Graduate Conference on the Normativity of Logic

Keynote Speakers:

• Florian Steinberger (Birkbeck College, University of London)

• Jack Woods (University of Leeds)

Are laws of logic normative? Do they, as Frege once claimed, prescribe “the way in which one ought to think if one is to think at all”? And if so, how and why? Or is this line of thought rather mistaken? Should we deny that logic has any specific normative status? And where would that leave us, if we still want to evaluate reasoning and now ask ourselves what norms are to be applied? Those and related question are the subject of this year's graduate conference of the Vienna Forum for Analytic Philosophy (WFAP), for which we are therefore happy to invite high-quality papers from graduate students on the following or related topics:

• Logical laws as (constitutive) norms for thought and reasoning

• Skepticism about the normative status of logic

• Bridge principles

• Normativity in the debate concerning Logical Pluralism

• Non-logical norms for reasoning, including evidential norms, truth norms, probabilistic norms, etc.

Submission information

Extended Deadline for submission of abstracts: 1st of April

Notification of acceptance: Beginning of April

Abstracts of approximately 500 words should be in English and prepared for blind review. The author’s name, affiliation, the title of the submitted paper, and e-mail address must be included in a separate document. Files can be submitted in PDF and should be sent to: [email protected]

All abstracts will be reviewed by members of the Vienna Forum for Analytic Philosophy and faculty members of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Vienna. Accepted papers should be suitable for a 30-min. presentation (approx. 3.000 words). It should be clear from your abstract which authors and debates your paper will address. Contributions relating to the work of the keynote speakers are particularly welcome.
