Salish Sea Aesthetics Workshop

We are pleased to announce the Salish Sea Aesthetics Workshop May 10-11, 2019, in Vancouver. We hope you will consider submitting your work and attending. The ASA has provided $2315 USD in support of the conference, with additional support from the Department of Philosophy at UBC and an SSHRC grant from Professor Dom Lopes.

The workshop, located at the University of British Columbia, will promote research in aesthetics and the philosophy of art by scholars working in the Salish Sea region of the United States and Canada. This region (sometimes referred to as the Pacific Northwest) stretches roughly from Portland, Oregon to Vancouver, British Columbia. We hope that the workshop also will forge connections and initiate dialogue among aestheticians working in the region.

Abstracts on any topic in aesthetics and the philosophy of art are invited. Abstracts from traditionally underrepresented groups (including women, racial minorities, and persons with disabilities, among others) are encouraged. Anyone is welcome to submit an abstract for the conference, although if your abstract is accepted you must become a member of the American Society for Aesthetics in order to present. You can join the ASA on-line: http://aesthetics-online.org. Our priority is people working in the Salish Sea Region, but if there are openings on the program we will consider work from outside the region. Abstracts should not exceed 750 words and must be prepared for anonymous review. Anyone is welcome to attend the workshop. The workshop is free for all participants.

Submission deadline: March 1st, 2019

After anonymous review, ten abstracts will be chosen for presentation at the conference. Travel support up to $250 (Canadian) is available for the two best student (graduate or undergraduate) abstracts received. Each presentation will be twenty minutes, followed by ten minutes of discussion with the audience. Papers will not be pre-read.  

 Keynote Speaker: Michael Nicoll Yahgulaanas (independent artist)

Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas is a contemporary artist whose wide-ranging artistic practice explores themes of identity, environmentalism and the human condition. Influenced by both Haida iconography and contemporary Asian visual culture, he has created an artistic practice that crosses diverse cultures, generations, and disciplines in search of accessibility and engagement as a counterpoint to stratification and isolation.

Workshop participants will be able to attend the UBC Museum of Anthropology on May 10th for a guided tour, funded by the ASA. The ASA has provided funds for daycare for participants travelling with children. Please contact the workshop organizers with any questions about daycare.
