The Phlox Research Group at Hamburg University (https://phloxgroup.wordpress.com/) is delighted to announce the 2019 Hamburg Summer School on Truthmaker Semantics, to take place July 22-26 at the University of Hamburg. The Summer School will be taught by Kit Fine (NYU), Mark Jago (Nottingham), Johannes Korbmacher (Utrecht), Stephan Krämer (Hamburg), and Friederike Moltmann (Paris, NYU).

Description

Truthmaker semantics is an approach to semantics that has attracted a growing amount of interest in recent years. It takes the content of a statement to be given in terms of the states that exactly verify it, where this is taken to require that the state—roughly, a  part or fragment of a world—be wholly relevant to the truth of the  statement. The truthmaker approach allows one to draw a number of  important hyperintensional distinctions that do not appear to be available to other approaches, like the more familiar possible world semantics. In this course, after an introduction to the history, the motivations, and the basic framework of truthmaker semantics, we will  survey its applications to (i) deontic and imperative logic, (ii) conditionals, (iii) partial content, (iv) intuitionistic and relevance  logic, (v) Bayesian epistemology and the theory of rational belief revision, as well as (vi) natural language semantics (attitude reports, modals, and intensional definite descriptions).

The course will take place from Monday, 22nd July to Friday, 26th July 2019 at the University of Hamburg. For more information, please visit

Call for attendance

We very much welcome external participants to the Summer School, though only a limited number of spaces are available. If you would like to participate, please send a registration email, attaching (i) a brief CV, and (ii) a short letter indicating how the course would benefit your work, to sommerkurs (at) gmx (dot) de. Registration is open until April 30th; we will notify applicants by the 10th of May. (Please note: Should we receive an extremely high number of applications, we may close applications at an earlier date.). The registration fee will be 25€ to cover refreshments and snacks throughout the course. The fee will be payable at the beginning of the event.

Conference on truthmaker semantics

And while in Hamburg, why not stick around for more truthmaker semantics? Kit Fine and the Emmy Noether Group Relevance (https://relevanceproject.wordpress.com/) will host the conference ‘Truthmaker Semantics: Applications in Philosophy and Linguistics’ which will take place from July 29th to July 31st. More information is available at https://relevanceproject.wordpress.com/events/tmsconference/.In case you intend to visit both events, please let us know when applying for the Summer School.

Other Hamburg events in July:

From July 18th to July 20th the Society for the Philosophy of Time will host the conference ‘Agency, Past and Future’ (https://s-p-o-t.weebly.com/agency-past-and-future.html) which will be preceded by a three-day reading seminar, from July 15th to July 17th.
