The Department of Philosophy at the University of Vienna is pleased to announce the 2019 Brentano Lectures, to be given by Professor Robert Brandom (Pittsburgh).
"Recollection and Recognition: Semantic and Practical Dimensions of Hegel’s Phenomenology"
Lecture 1 (8 April):
Representation, Expression, and Recollection
As I read Hegel, he reads Kant as offering a normative account of representation. What is represented serves as a standard for assessments of the correctness of what count as representings of it just in virtue of its authority over them and their responsibility to it. Building on this conception, Hegel offers an account of the representational dimension of conceptual content that is distinguished from Kant’s by including both a social recognitive dimension and a historical recollective dimension.
Lecture 2 (9 April):
Magnanimity, Heroism, and Agency: Recognition as Recollection
The final, post-modern form of norm-instituting reciprocal recognition that Hegel prophesies has an essentially historical recollective structure: the structure of trust. It is articulated by symmetrical attitudes of confession and forgiveness. Recognition understood as including the retrospective, recollective institution of expressively progressive rational traditions reconciles the pre-modern insight into the status-dependence of normative attitudes with the liberating modern insight into the attitude-dependence of normative statuses. It encompasses not only a new form of community, but also a new heroic, magnanimous form of practical agency.
The lectures will take place from 18.00 - 19.30 on 8 and 9 April 2019 in the Aula, University Campus, University of Vienna.
Alongside the lectures we are also hosting 'The Social Institution of Norms: a workshop with Robert Brandom' (April 8-10). For more information on the workshop, please visit: https://philevents.org/event/show/65554
