Undergraduate Summer School in Philosophy of Education

University of Birmingham, UK 2nd-4th September 2019

The Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain and the University of Birmingham will be hosting an Undergraduate Summer School in Philosophy of Education from Monday 2nd to Wednesday 4th September 2019.

This is an extraordinary opportunity for undergraduate students to learn more about philosophy of education on a beautiful university campus located in the heart of England. The Summer School involves three days of lectures, seminar discussions and social activities. No prior knowledge of philosophy of education is required. The event is free to attend and the Society will fund all meals and accommodation. Participants will be responsible for their own travel costs but a limited number of travel bursaries will be available for applicants who are able to demonstrate financial need.

The theme for 2019 is the aims of education. Perhaps the most basic question we can ask abouteducation is what it’s for. Why is education necessary and what does an educated person look like?Do we educate people to make them more rational? To prepare them for the world of work? To acquaint them with the best that has been thought and said? Or is there something wrongheaded about trying to pin down the aims of education? Should we rather keep an open mind about how learners might be transformed by their educational encounters?

To help us explore these questions, we are delighted to be joined by some of the country’s leadingphilosophers of education:

  • Prof Amanda Fulford (Edge Hill University)

  • Dr Ben Kotzee (University of Birmingham)

  • Prof Kristjan Kristjansson (University of Birmingham)

  • Prof Michael Reiss (UCL Institute of Education)

  • Prof Carrie Winstanley (Roehampton University)

To apply, please send a short expression of interest (max 500 words), explaining why you would like to attend the Summer School, and a letter of recommendation from an academic tutor/supervisor to Jane Gatley ([email protected]). The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday 17th May.
