Philosophy and Work. Yesterday and Now

The theme is to be developed in accordance with the criteria and terms further indicated, by taking a cue from the following. The legacy of the Twentieth Century for the new millennium has provided an idea of work that the latter has not been able, so far, to redefine and interpret in the light of interpretative keys of his own. This is primarily related to the fragmentation and hybridization of the working class, traditionally the main subject of investigation and focus of modern reflections on work. The current issue aims at inquiring the genesis of the concept of work, in order to understand whether and how a ‘pre-modern’ perspective can be of some use. Such an investigation is not meant to renounce to the categories defined by Karl Marx and Max Weber. Rather, it aims at bringing the idea of work to its most original nucleus by investigating its connection with other aspects of human action, especially since, in our time, the distinction between these fields is not so well defined and clear anymore.

Addressing today the issue of work from a philosophical point of view requires an effort to overcome the idea of ‘instrumental’ work, merely aimed at producing goods. Which idea of man (and his history as ‘animal laborans’) is conceivable before and after the Calvinistic/capitalistic model of work? An ‘after’ should also deal with the problem of the automation of production processes.

A non-binding list of possible, and particularly appreciated, aspects of the issue can be found below:

·         The new social actors who have replaced the salaryman;

·         theological background of the notion of work in the modern era;

·         disappearance or transformation of the homo faber in the contemporary world;

·         future of the notion of work in his ‘4.0 form’;

·         ‘improductive’ perspectives on the concept of work (e.g. Max Scheler and Simone Weil).

For procedures and terms of submission, kindly note the following:

• All participants are required to send an abstract, which will undergo prior evaluation by the editorial board and will be selected on the basis of its relevance to the issue as stated in the CFP.
• Abstract (about 2,000 characters, including spaces) submission deadline is August 30, 2019. The result of the assessment will be communicated to the authors after the expiry of the deadline.
• Paper (20,000 – 60,000 characters, including spaces) submission deadline  is October 30, 2019.
• Papers must be unpublished and not be simultaneously submitted to other journal for evaluation.
• The languages accepted are: Italian, English, French, German, Spanish.

P.O.I. uses a system of double-blind peer-review.

All papers must contain: the name of the author, the title of the contribution, an abstract (up to 2,000 characters, including spaces) and 5 keywords, both in the language the article is written in and in English; they must also include the author’s e-mail address and a brief profile of his or her scientific activity.

Filosofia e lavoro. Ieri e oggi

La rivista semestrale “P.O.I. – Points of Interest” invita ricercatori e studiosi di filosofia, e ambiti disciplinari affini, a contribuire al numero II/2019 della rivista, sviluppando il tema in oggetto, in conformità ai criteri e ai termini di seguito indicati, a partire da una o più delle riflessioni proposte. Il Novecento ha lasciato in eredità al nuovo millennio un concetto di lavoro di cui non ha ancora saputo produrre chiavi interpretative, a partire dalla frammentazione e ibridazione di quello che era il classico soggetto dell’indagine sul lavoro, quella classe operaia che aveva costituito il fulcro dell’interesse della riflessione moderna. Il presente numero si propone di indagare sulla genesi del concetto di lavoro, cercando di comprendere se e come possa essere utilizzata una concezione ‘pre-moderna’, che non abbia la pretesa di rinunciare alle categorie fissate da Karl Marx e Max Weber, ma che voglia ricondurre il concetto al suo nucleo più originario, investigandone le connessioni con gli altri aspetti dell’agire umano, proprio perché oggi questa differenziazione non è più chiara ed evidente. Antimo Negri ricordava l’esigenza di una storia della filosofia del lavoro e sul lavoro, partendo dalla sua forma manuale, “come segno dell’umanità più differenziata dell’uomo”, una filosofia che “non viene fuori quando l’uomo si fa possessore unicamente di idee che sembrano cadere dal cielo”.

Confrontarsi oggi con la tematica del lavoro da un punto di visto filosofico richiede una riflessione che superi l’idea di un lavoro ‘strumentale’, volto esclusivamente alla produzione di beni: quale concezione dell’uomo (e della storia in quanto storia dell’animale-che-lavora) può darsi prima e dopo (in un ‘dopo’ teorico che affronti il problema della automatizzazione dei processi produttivi, la ‘quarta rivoluzione industriale’) del modello calvinistico e capitalistico del lavoro?

Una lista di possibili tematiche da sviluppare è la seguente:

·         Riflessione sulle nuove figure sociali che sostituiscono la classica figura del lavoratore salariato;

·         Presupposti teologici della nozione di lavoro nell’età moderna;

·         Scomparsa o rideclinazione dell’homo faber nel mondo contemporaneo;

·         Il futuro del lavoro nella forma ‘4.0’;

·         Prospettive ‘improduttive’ del concetto di lavoro (tra gli altri, Max Scheler, Simone Weil).

Per modalità e termini di invio dei contributi, si osservi quanto di seguito indicato:

• La risposta al presente CFP dovrà essere preceduta dall’invio di un abstract, che sarà sottoposto a valutazione preventiva da parte della redazione sulla base della sua attinenza al tema così come declinato nella Call.
• Termine ultimo per l’invio dell’abstract (circa 2000 caratteri, spazi inclusi): 30 agosto 2019.
  La comunicazione dell’esito delle valutazioni avverrà alla scadenza del termine.
• Termine ultimo per l’invio del contributo integrale (20.000 – 60.000 caratteri, spazi inclusi): 30 ottobre 2019.
• I contributi devono essere inediti e non devono essere già stati sottoposti a valutazione per altre riviste.
• Le lingue accettate per la presentazione dei contributi sono: italiano, inglese, francese, tedesco, spagnolo.

La rivista utilizza un sistema di double blind peer-review. I contributi, nella versione integrale, dovranno essere accompagnati da: nome dell’autore, titolo del contributo, abstract in lingua originale e in inglese (max. 2000 caratteri ciascuno, spazi inclusi), 5 parole-chiave o tag in lingua originale e in inglese; dovranno includere inoltre l’indirizzo e-mail dell’autore e un breve profilo dell’attività scientifica.
