Philosophical Society of Southern Africa (PSSA) Conference 2020 – Call for Papers

The 2020 conference of the PSSA will take place between Monday 13th and Wednesday 15th January, and be held at the Fern Hill Hotel in the KZN midlands. (Additional details about the venue appear below.) The conference is hosted by the Philosophy discipline at University of KwaZulu-Natal.

We solicit titles and abstracts (150-250 words) long, for inclusion on the conference programme. The conference has no theme, and papers in any area of philosophy are welcome. The draft programme design provides for 55 minute presentation slots, of which at least 15 minutes should be reserved for discussion.

Please submit your title and abstract to [email protected] on or before Friday 30 August. Abstracts should be in .RTF or .DOC format, and with your surname as the filename.

The 2020 conference will include a poster session on teaching philosophy in South Africa. Posters for this session can describe innovative modules, pedagogical experiments, or development of South African teaching resources (including translations into indigenous languages). Poster session submissions have the same deadline, and also require titles and 150-250 word abstracts. Please specify poster submission in your covering email. It is possible to submit both a poster for the teaching philosophy session and a paper for presentation on the programme. You can also contact us for guidelines about posters.

Details of the conference proceedings volume of the South African Journal of Philosophy will be sent to everyone whose paper appears on the programme.

If you are interested in convening a panel of several related papers on the programme, please contact the conference organisers for guidelines regarding panels.

Please email submissions and enquiries to: [email protected]

More on the venue: The Fern Hill Hotel is close to Midmar Dam and nature reserve, and a short distance from the Nelson Mandela capture site. It is a little over 1 hour’s drive from Durban, and about four and a half hours drive from Johannesburg, and close to parts of the Drakensberg. The entire conference will take place at the hotel. Everyone who submits an abstract will be sent information about accommodation options for the conference, including alternatives close to the conference venue.

The PSSA2020 Organising Group consists of Lungelo Mbatha, Michael Omoge, David Spurrett and Gregory Swer
