Introduction

This book is dedicated to expert research topics, and analyses of ethics-related inquiry, at the machine ethics and morality level: key players, benefits, problems, policies, and strategies. Gathering some of the leading voices that recognize and understand the complexities and intricacies of human-machine ethics early on in this phenomenon provides a resourceful compendium to be accessed by decision-makers and theorists concerned with identification and adoption of human-machine ethics initiatives, leading to needed policy adoption and reform for human-machine entities, their technologies, and their societal and legal obligations. The book encompasses theory and practice sections for each topical component of important areas of human-machine ethics both in existence today, and prospective for the future. Yet, human-machine ethics is not a futuristic matter; it is everpresent, here and now – thanks largely to ongoing technological advances in robotics, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and synthetic biology, among other allied fields.

Objective

Up-to-date, state-of-the-art perspective on advancement of definitions, terms, policies, philosophies, and relevant determinants related to human-machine ethics and morality. It must be published in order to provide a comprehensive compendium that exists to help lay the foundation for referencing early twenty-first century research into the present and future phenomenon of human-machine ethics and morality. It may hold promise for decision- and policy-makers as the crucial aspects of machine ethics become an elusive and challenging act for governments and societies to regulate and control moving forward into the next decade. The book is an anthology of wholistic, interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary approaches to the field of machine ethics and morality.

Target Audience

Some of the advantages to this publication include the global diversity of expert speakers and voices, and their pragmatic, if not at times prophetic, topical perspectives. Popular AI ethics and robot ethics inquiries may be the focus of many existing titles or projects, yet the realm of human-machine ethics and morality provides a locus for broader inclusion. While some related topical writings and projects may exist scattered across the WWW, having a plethora of relevant, critical expert authors under the all-encompassing umbrella of machine ethics and morality will ensure a strong, vibrant, and important foundational ethics resource for students, professors, scholars, ethicists, philosophers, scientists, lawyers, politicians, and key government lawmakers.

Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before November 2, 2019, a chapter proposal of 1,000 to 2,000 words clearly explaining the mission and concerns of their proposed chapter. Authors will be notified by November 16, 2019 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by March 1, 2020, and all interested authors must consult the guidelines for manuscript submissions at Before You Write | IGI Global prior to submission. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project. 

Note: There are no submission or acceptance fees for manuscripts submitted to this book publication, Machine Ethics and Morality. All manuscripts are accepted based on a double-blind peer review editorial process.
