We are excited to announce that this year's Essex Lectures in Philosophy during Welcome Week will be presented by Professor Sally Haslanger (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

The “Essex Lectures in Philosophy” (formerly the “mini course”) take place once or twice a year when the School of Philosophy and Art History invites a prestigious academic to give a series of lectures. This year, we are excited to announce that our guest lecturer will be Professor Sally Haslanger who is the Ford Professor of Philosophy in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Sally began her philosophical life specializing in analytical metaphysics, epistemology, and in ancient philosophy (especially Aristotle). Over time, she developed interests in social and political philosophy, feminist theory and critical race theory.  Recently Sally has been working on social practices, social structure, structural explanation, and topics in feminist epistemology, much of which will be examined in this lecture series.

The first lecture in this year’s series will be provide an introduction to Sally’s work and will be followed by two lectures which will delve deeper into her research before finishing with an open seminar.

The schedule will be:

  • Materiality, and Culture: 10.00am-12.00pm, Wednesday 2 October 2019.
  • Articulated Systems of Domination: Diagnosis and Critique: 2.30pm-4.30pm, Wednesday 2 October 2019.
  • Epistemologies of Injustice in Theory and Practice: 2.30pm-4.30pm, Thursday 3 October 2019.
