Thematic Session: Ethical conflicts in biodiversity conservation

In this session we welcome contributions that discuss different types of ethical conflicts in biodiversity conservation. Amongst other things, such conflicts could concern the aims, methods, costs or policies of biodiversity conservation. Potential topics include the conflicts between social justice and conservation goals or questions about whether (or to what extent) biodiversity should be conserved by ‘unnatural’ means such as biotechnology or assisted migration.

We particularly welcome proposals from environmental philosophy but also from other disciplines. Primary criterion is a focus on one or several of the ethical dimensions of conservation conflicts. The session will consist of 30 minute-presentations followed by time for Q&A.

The conference:

The session will be part of the World Biodiversity Forum conference taking place from the 23-28 of February 2020 in Davos, Switzerland. The aim of this interdisciplinary meeting is it to redefine and set the agenda for biodiversity as a focal point over the next 10 years.

Confirmed keynote speakers are, amongst many others, the philosophers Markku Oksanen, Gary Varner, Workineh Kelbessa and Andrew Light.

Application:

Please submit a 200 to 400 words abstract of your presentation (including contact details and affiliation) to either Anna Deplazes Zemp ([email protected]) or Anna Wienhues ([email protected]). We are environmental ethicists working at the Centre for Ethics of the University of Zurich and convene this thematic session.

The submission deadline is the 30. November 2019.

For more information about the conference or the thematic session, please consult the website https://www.worldbiodiversityforum.org/ or get in touch with us via email.
