CFP: Conflict and Harmony: From Embodied Emotions to Global Realms

The Joint Meeting of the SACP (http://www.sacpweb.org/) and the ASACP (http://philosophy.unimelb.edu.au/asacp/) in 2013 will be held at the National University of Singapore (http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/philo/). The conference theme, "Conflict and Harmony: From Embodied Emotions to Global Realms," is designed to invite scholars representing Asian traditions of thought to present their research on the many ways in which philosophers of these heritages thematize the dynamics of conflict and harmony. Relevant topics could span a broad range of problematics, from the internal conflicts of desires and ideas, emotions and reason, body and mind, and how to resolve these in practice to social, political and global conflicts and strategies for their resolution. The theme will also accommodate discussions of the continuing conflicts or historical development from conflicts to reconciliation between different schools of thought and philosophies in different traditions or between tradition! The theme is intended to increase engagement amongst participants. However, the conference will consider abstracts and presentations on various topics that correspond to members' areas of interest as well.

Deadline for Abstracts and Proposals: Feb 15, 2013

Presentation and panel proposal abstracts should be sent electronically to BOTH Mary Bockover ([email protected]) and Michael Barnhart ([email protected]), AND cc'd to Roger Ames ([email protected]). Abstracts for individual papers should be between 200-300 words, including a title. Panel proposals should include the title and a brief description of the panel, names and affiliation of panelists and titles of each participant's presentation, with the same word-limit as above. The deadline for abstract submission is February 15, 2013, a deadline that pertains to proposals submitted by faculty members and graduate students alike. Notice of acceptance of proposals will be sent to your e-mail address sometime in the beginning of March. In order to minimize the difficulty of dealing with late cancellations, payment of the registration fee for the joint meeting is required within 2 weeks after acceptance notices have been received, in any case no later than April 1.

To encourage student participation, the SACP and ASACP have set up Graduate Student Essay Contest Awards for the 2013 conference Student Essay Contest Prizes are: First prize: $1,000; Second prize, $750; and Third prize, $500. The awards will be applied to the travel and accommodation expenses for those attending the 2013 Joint Meeting of the SACP and ASACP, so award winners should bring their travel receipts with them. In order to have their essays considered for the prize, graduate students should submit a complete essay of no more than 10 pages (or 4,000 words) to BOTH Mary Bockover and Michael Barnhart, AND cc-ed to Roger Ames, by March 15, 2013. Note once again that the deadline for the final complete essay is separate from the deadline for the paper abstract, as the latter must be received by the general deadline of Feb 15, 2013, in order to be considered for acceptance to the conference.
