CFP: Conference on Logic and Philosophy of Science (CLPS13)

The Centre for Logic and Philosophy of Science (CLPS) of Ghent University was founded in 1993. On occasion of its 20th anniversary the Centre organises an international Conference on Logic and Philosophy of Science (CLPS13) on the themes that are central to its research:

• Logical analysis of scientific reasoning processes
• Methodological and epistemological analysis of scientific reasoning processes

Keynote talks will be given by Diderik Batens (the founder of the Centre), three logicians (Natacha Alechina, Graham Priest, and Stephen Read), and three philosophers of science (Hanne Andersen, Hasok Chang and Jim Woodward).

We welcome submissions for contributed papers on every topic that falls within the scope of the two themes mentioned above. 

Examples relating to the first topic are: logical analyses of paraconsistent reasoning, reasoning under uncertainty, defeasible reasoning, abduction, causal reasoning, induction, analogical reasoning, belief revision, theory change, conceptual change, erotetic reasoning, argumentation, ... 

Examples relating to the second topic are: methodological and epistemological analyses of causation and mechanisms, scientific discovery, the structure of scientific theories and models, experiments and thought experiments, theory choice, theory dynamics, rationality, the social organisation of science, expertise, science policy, ....

On top of the keynote talks and the regular sessions with contributed papers, we will also schedule eleven special symposia with a limited number of papers:

• Logic and action (#1)
• Mathematics and computation: Historical and epistemological issues (#2)
• Causality in/and medicine (#3)
• Proofs, programmes, procedures: formal and epistemic issues (#4)
• Analogy and metaphor in creative problem solving (#5)
• Rational disagreement in science (#6)
• Nominalism and its foes: formal methods (#7)
• Non-standard models of belief change (#8)
• Moral responsibility of scientists (#9)
• Functional analysis and explanation (#10)
• Solving/handling/avoiding paradoxes by means of non-classical logics (#11)

Each symposium is organised by one or two post-doctoral researchers of the CLPS, and it is possible to submit a paper for these symposia. The description of the symposia can be found here: http://www.clps13.ugent.be/symposia

If you want to present a paper at CLPS13, please upload an abstract in PDF format (between 500 and 1000 words) to:https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=clps13 before 1 April 2013. You will be asked to choose between one of the following submission categories:

• Logical analysis of scientific reasoning processes
• Methodological and epistemological analysis of scientific reasoning processes
• Symposium submission

If you submit an abstract for a symposium, don’t forget to mention the symposium number in the title.
