Words matter. The language we use shapes our political discourse and can be used both to liberate and to oppress. New words and concepts have helped galvanise positive political change whilst slurs, dog whistles and other negative linguistic devices have contributed and continue to contribute to the existence of discrimination. Our language does not exist in an ethical, social or political vacuum.

The Vienna Forum for Analytic Philosophy (WFAP) welcomes submissions of abstracts for its 10th annual graduate conference: Just Saying? On the Social and Political implications of Language and its Philosophy. The conference will take place either virtually or in hybrid format from the 5th to the 7th of July.

We welcome submissions on any topic related to our theme including but not limited to:

  • The Ethics of Language

  • Hermeneutical Injustice

  • The Philosophy of Language with respect to marginalised groups (e.g. gender, race, sexuality or ability and language)

  • Hate Speech (e.g. slurs and dog whistles)

  • The semantics and pragmatics of value-laden language.

Submission information:

  • Length: Maximum 500 words

  • Deadline: 18th of the April 2021

  • Submission: Please submit a suitably anonymized abstract to [email protected] with the subject line "WFAP2021 Abstract Submission", along with a cover sheet containing your contact and institutional information.

We especially welcome and encourage submissions from members of under-represented groups in philosophy.

Covid statement: The conference will either take place virtually or in a hybrid format, depending on how the situation develops across Europe. That notwithstanding, all speakers will be able to present virtually, if they are uncomfortable with or unable to travel. Should we be able to run a hybrid conference, we hope to be able to provide financial assistance with respect to travel, testing and accommodation, though cannot guarantee that at this stage.
