Dr Suzanne Killmister (Monash): “Dignity and Autonomy: Tracing the Connections”

Autonomy and dignity are two concepts that are frequently invoked together, and whose inter-relatedness is often taken for granted. Despite this (and with the noticeable exception of Kant scholarship, which I’m bracketing for the purposes of this talk), the literatures on the two concepts have developed in isolation from one another. In this talk, I make a first attempt at putting those literatures in dialogue. My hope is that doing so can both bring greater clarity to debates in the respective fields, and also provide support for the importance of ameliorative conceptual analysis.
