“The most merciful thing in this world is, it seems to me, the inability of the human mind to relate all of its contents. We live on a peaceful island of ignorance in the middle of the black seas of infinity and we are not destined to travel far. "

Ladies and Gentlemen,

with the opening words of the Call of Cthulhu by H.P. Lovecraft, who would be celebrating his 131st birthday this year, we would like to invite you to participate in the 6th edition of PhilosophyCon. This year's event will be held on May 14-17th online via Zoom and will be streamed on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

The co-organizers of the PhilosophyCon are the University of Silesia, the Pedagogical University of Krakow, Filozofia tak bardzo, EduVRLab Research Laboratory, Optimum Pareto Foundation, Philosophers’ Doctoral Scientific Association "Zagreus" at the University of Silesia, Political Doctoral Science Club at the University of Silesia.

PhilosophyCon proudly stands on two pillars: the conference and the convention.

Thanks to the editions so far, each year about 200 beings learn more about such fantastic issues like rhetoric of video games, bioethical aspect of augmentations straight out of the Deus Ex series, and ontological plots of well-known manga and anime. The sixth iteration of the cycle is based around the topics of occultism, horror and magic, yet do not limit yourself to such ones!

In the conference part, philosophers and other scientists (from literary scholars, through theologians, to palaeontologists) from Polish and foreign universities will combine their passion for science with their love for pop culture (movies, games, books, comics and much more). The topics proposed by the organizers concern the limits of knowledge and limitations of the scientific method, horror, and the truly mysterious and dark knowledge, like magic and the occult.

Proposed issues:

●        communicability of subjective experiences

●        conceptualization and the subconscious

●        skepticism and paradigms

●        inventions and threats

●        alchemy

●        cryptozoology

●        demonology

●        doppelgangers

●        conspiracy theories

●        modern myths

●        Great Old Ones

●        SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT

We also encourage You to submit proposals for discussion panels, workshops, etc.

We accept applications in two forms:

  1. Video abstracts - considered first, recording time 1-2 minutes.
  2. Written abstracts - considered second, up to 1000 characters.

In the commentary to the abstract, please add information about the preferred form of presentation: A) live lecture or B) video essay / pre-recorded lecture. The maximum speaking / video time is 30 minutes. The uploaded videos will be made available in advance and will be discussed by the creators and viewers during the event in a workshop.

Abstract deadline: 15 April 2021. Decision about acceptation will be issued within a week.

Applications should be sent by e-mail to [email protected] or via the form on our website (philosophycon.wixsite.com).

Post-conference publications are planned in the third volume of PhilosophyPulp or in the Folia Philosophica journal.

The convention part of the event includes attractions available for everyone, such as RPG sessions and board games (online), competitions, meetings with special guests, workshops, film screenings and live music.

What else? As usual, you can decide!

We’re recruiting people who run special attractions at [email protected] and through the website philosophycon.wixsite.com/philosophycon.

All anticipated (and unforeseen) surprises will be announced in the coming weeks on the Facebook page (facebook.com/philosophycon) and our partners' websites.

Active and passive participation in the event is free of charge. See you soon!
