Alternative Grading

The APA Committee on the Teaching of Philosophy (CTP) and the American Association of Philosophy Teachers (AAPT) seek presenters for a session of the AAPT-APA Teaching Hub on Alternative Grading at the 2022 Eastern Division meeting. 

The process of giving and receiving grades is often painful for students and teachers alike. But grading in some form or other is an institutional reality. This workshop foregrounds alternatives to traditional grading. The aim is to highlight grading practices that better promote learning goals, and that foster values like fairness and inclusivity.

The basic questions this session asks include the following: What alternatives are there to traditional grading? How can those alternatives best be implemented in philosophy classrooms? What advantages and disadvantages does alternative grading have over traditional grading? What is grading for, and how do alternative grading schemes achieve that?

As well as broadening participants’ imaginative horizons by introducing them to alternative grading methods, the session aims to include concrete suggestions for implementation, as well as discussion of the goals and value of grading. We invite proposals on topics including, but not limited to, the following:

• Particular systems of alternative grading, such as mastery-based grading; specifications grading; self- and peer-assessed grading; ungrading
• Inclusive grading practices
• Grading and fairness
• Grading and learning outcomes
• Pitfalls to avoid when implementing alternative grading systems
• Alternative grading and extra credit

Format: Teaching Hub sessions are expected to be highly interactive. Proposals should indicate how audience members will participate in the session. One format is a presentation followed by Q&A. Others might have participants working through an interactive experience.

Submissions: To submit a proposal for consideration, please email a proposal of no more than 500 words, prepared for anonymous review, to Chris Blake-Turner ([email protected]) by Sunday July 31, with the subject line “2022 Eastern TH—Alternative Grading.” Please include a brief explanation of your approach, as well as any relevant experiences leading to your approach, as well as your plan for the presentation. Supporting material such as syllabi, assignments, or handouts may also be included.

In the body of the email, please include your name, institutional affiliation (if any), position (if any), and contact information. The organizing committee will select participants for the session in early August.
