4:00-5:00 Prof. Jean-Louis Fabiani (EHESS Paris-CEU Budapest) will give a paper on ‘Durkheim’s Last Argument’, focusing on Durkheim’s lectures on pragmatism during the academic year 1913-1914.
5:00-5:20 Break
5:20-6:20 Dr Simon Susen (City University London) will give a paper on ‘Critical Pragmatism or Pragmatic Criticism?’ and will focus on Luc Boltanski’s relation to pragmatism.
Each papers will be followed by 15mn of questions and answers.
Prof. Jean-Louis Fabiani is a French philosopher and sociologist and was the student of Pierre Bourdieu. His most recent book is entitled ‘What is a French Philosopher? The Social Life of Concepts 1880-1980’ (Paris, Editions de l’EHESS, 2010).
Dr Simon Susen is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at City University London. He is Associate Member of the Bauman Institute and Managing Editor of the Journal of Classical Sociology. His most recent book isentitled ‘The Foundations of the Social: Between Critical Theory and Reflexive Sociology’ Oxford: Bardwell Press.
This workshop is the first of two symposia related to a research project on ‘The Influence of Anglo-American Pragmatism on French Philosophy and Sociology’.
Our second workshop will be dedicated to ‘The Influence of Pragmatism on Deleuze’s Philosophy’ and will take place on the 3rd of May 2013 at the University of Warwick.
