The Germany-based student-led Animal Ethics Network (“Tierethiknetzwerk”) organizes a conference for students interested in presenting and discussing diverse topics in Animal Ethics. 

Possible Topics

  • Animals in wildlife
  • Animal rights theory
  • Political turn in Animal Ethics
  • Speciesism
  • Animals in meta-ethics
  • Animal Ethics in academia
  • Animals in food, clothing, testing..
  • Animal Ethics and climate change
  • Moral status of animals
  • Animal minds and Animal Ethics
  • Geographical perspectives on hunting

These are just exemplary topics. Any topic around Animal Ethics is acceptable. We are also highly interested in interdisciplinary approaches.

We are very happy to confirm the attendance of the following experts, for students to get feedback on the talks from professionals:

  • Prof. Clare Palmer (Texas A&M, USA; Companion Animal Ethics, Wildlife Ethics)
  • Dr. Eze Paez (Pompeu Fabra, Spain; Wildlife Ethics, Animal Future Ethics)
  • Dr. Tatjana Visak (Mannheim, Germany; Ethics of Veganism, Animal Population Ethics)

When: Friday and Saturday; 14th and 15th January 2022. (Exact time will depend on time zones of participators)

Where: Online.

How to apply: Send an anonymized abstract of max. 500 words OR an anonymized paper of max. 3000 words until November 15th 2021 to [email protected]. Include your name, university status group and university in the e-mail. Successful Applicants will be notified by late-November.

Who can apply: BA, MA and PhD students. Talks will be balanced among different status groups.

The conference will be held in English. Each talk is 45 minutes; including a 20-30-minute-long presentation followed by a discussion. We are in talks with a publisher to produce an edited book of selected conference papers. The conference seeks to connect students interested in Animal Ethics; virtual get-togethers will be arranged. There is no tolerance on discriminatory language or behavior. There is no conference fee.
