Details

Blasco Disputatio is a periodical workshop designed to promote the discussion on topics in epistemology, metaphysics, the philosophy of mind and the philosophy of language. Each edition of this workshop focuses on a particular issue to be disputed by two invited speakers that will defend divergent, if not opposing, views. A call for papers will be made for contributions that will explore further aspects of the topic.

Recent debates in the epistemology of modality are increasingly focused on the issue of epistemic priority.  At an ontological level, a widely accepted view is that essence is prior to necessity, and then possibility is seen as what is allowed by the essences. The corresponding epistemological question—namely, whether knowledge of essence (and necessity) is prior to knowledge of possibility—is a lot more controversial and the contemporary literature is fiercely divided about it. In the 2022 Blasco Disputatio, Michael Wallner and Sonia Roca-Royes will argue for their differing views on the matter. The workshop will also be open to discussing any related issues on the epistemology of modality. As in previous editions of the workshop, the invited papers, together with a selection of the submitted papers, will be considered for publication on a special issue of the journal Disputatio.
