CfA: Euro-American Migration and the Development of Postwar Philosophy
Tilburg University
August 22-23, 2022
In the 1930s, dozens of European philosophers sought refuge in the United States, escaping the quickly deteriorating political situation on the continent. Among them were several philosophers who significantly influenced the course of postwar philosophy (e.g. Theodor Adorno, Hannah Arendt, Rudolf Carnap, Herbert Feigl, Carl Gustav Hempel, Max Horkheimer, Herbert Marcuse, Hans Reichenbach, Alfred Tarski). How did the migration affect the development of philosophical traditions such as pragmatism, logical empiricism, phenomenology, and critical theory? And why were American philosophers receptive to some but not to other schools of thought?
This conference is devoted to the impact of the migration on the course of postwar philosophy and brings together historians specialized in American philosophy, logical empiricism, phenomenology, and critical theory. The aim of the conference is to study the influence of the migration on the development of these different traditions and to bridge to scholastic boundaries that have shaped the historiography of twentieth-century philosophy.
