CFP: Special issue of The Philosophy of Science (Filozofia Nauki) "Talking (and Not Talking) about Morals, Taste, and Art"

Submission deadline: March 31, 2022

Details

The Philosophy of Science (Filozofia Nauki) invites submissions for a special  interdisciplinary issue of the journal.

This volume is devoted to the language speakers use to talk about their aesthetic and gustatory experiences, in which they express moral judgments and they give voice to their praise or bias. Subjective aspects of reality have recently received considerable attention from philosophers of language and linguists. The hotly debated problems include: disagreement, semantic and pragmatic mechanisms involved in encoding judgment, and the semantics of slurs. Some attention has also been paid to the issues of how using derogatory or xenophobic language poisons the conversational ground and to the phenomenon of taboo words. Fewer papers have been devoted to the language used to express emotions or disagreement about them.

We invite contributions relating, but not limited to:
- semantics of aesthetic and moral adjectives, predicates of taste
- semantics and pragmatics of subjective judgments
- new approaches to expressivism
- disagreement
- perspectivality and indexicality
- slurs and expletives
- taboo
- metaphor and other literary devices
