The concept of the world has long been central to philosophy. Just today, at the time of globalization, systemic ecology and space travel, it is instead little considered. This call intends to solicit a new debate in the philosophical field but suitably open to science. In fact, it is about discussing the elements that come together in the concept of world: the relationship between some key concepts of physics (time, space, movement, matter, life), metaphysics (God, totality, foundation, ontological categories) and anthropology (action, freedom, community, good, value). On the border between theoretical thought and intuitive vision, symbolism and concrete practices, the world is from the very beginning linked to Heaven and Earth, to kosmos and saeculum, in the attempt to obtain a unitary picture, that is a representation of what, more or less conflicting, unites man, nature, artefacts. Hence some guiding questions: When does a set of facts or things constitute a world? Is the world primarily a physical or social dimension, is it more a representation or a reality? Does the world coincide with the nature? Do the origin of the world and the origin of being coincide? Is a plurality of worlds really possible?  In what sense is human action worldly? Has the world a normative value? What is the relationship between politics, history and cosmology? Within the framework of these questions, contributions are invited on the following topics:

  • Central philosophical moments in the history of the concept of the world
  • Analysis of the concept of world between physics, biology and metaphysics
  • Peculiar aspects of the ethical-political concept of the world
  • World and representation today: imagines, symbols, maps, networks, that depict the globalization or the contemporary universe
