Technological progress has vastly increased humanity’s quality of life. However, it has also placed us in a dangerous position: we are now more than ever capable of destroying ourselves or at least our long-term potential. Will humanity survive these existential threats? What is the moral significance of avoiding them? What can we do to reduce catastrophic and existential risks?

You are invited to a fireside chat with the philosopher Toby Ord (Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute) to discuss these and other related issues. This event will coincide with the launch of the Hong Kong Catastrophic Risk Centre (HKCRC), a new research centre on global catastrophic and existential risks hosted by the Department of Philosophy at Lingnan University.

You are welcome to join the event online through Zoom or in person (Lingnan campus, venue TBC) on the 20th of January (Thursday) from 5pm to 6:30pm (Hong Kong Standard Time, GMT +8).

Schedule:
5:00–5:10: Welcome address.
5:10–5:30: Screening of Toby Ord’s pre-recorded talk ‘The Precipice: Existential Risk and the Future of Humanity’.
5:30–6:10: Fireside Chat with Toby Ord (Future of Humanity Institute, Oxford) and Andrea Sauchelli (Philosophy & HKCRC, Lingnan).
6:10–6:30: Q&A.
