Thinking the City Through Fragmentation and Reconfiguration: Aesthetic and Conceptual Challenges

SUMMARY

The relationship between aesthetics, the arts, and the city has taken on new forms in the last century and a half, in a process that coincides with both the development of modern metropolises and the emergence of new technologies that have allowed us to know, study and reinvent the urban experience. At the same time, cities have always raised fundamental aesthetic questions concerning the ways of feeling, perceiving and inhabiting the spatial and temporal structures that condition the human experience, as well as the relationship with nature and the non-urban in general.

Fragmentation and reconfiguration: this conceptual pair is intended to guide the contributions to the conference and the way in which they propose to develop the rapport between philosophical thought and the city. The two concepts naturally communicate with other interrelated notions, such as construction and destruction, fragment and whole, the singularity of each thing and the theoretical tendency to search for a comprehensive synthesis. The main goal of this conference is the exploration of creative and dialectical tensions between fragmentation and reconfiguration that can open a critical and differential space – a space of thought and practice. In this sense, it seeks to explore the different ways in which human experience and artistic practice engage with and respond to the fragmentation that characterises modern cities. It is hoped that the conference will also be a space to help us to break open the homogenous images of contemporary cities created by processes linked to capitalism and globalisation, which time and again obfuscate other forms of life.

Proposals should fall within one of the following themes:

- Themes and authors of philosophy that explore the dynamics between fragmentation and reconfiguration (construction and destruction; fragment and whole; singularity and synthesis; morphology), and that can contribute to critically thinking about urban space;

- Philosophy of/in the city: historical-philosophical approaches;

- Is there an anti-urban tendency in philosophy?

- Philosophical approaches to the dynamics between fragmentation and reconfiguration when linked to the challenges of contemporary cities: ecology, megalopolises, tourism and gentrification, nature and technology, surveillance and security, phenomena of social fragmentation and cultural (dis)integration: ghettoization and multiculturalism.

- The aesthetic experience of the city in its perceptual, sensory, and spatial-temporal aspect;

- Case studies from Art (architecture, literature, painting, film, photography, sound arts, etc.) working with the fragmentation and reconfiguration of the city;

- Contributions from emerging philosophical fields such as "urban aesthetics" and "everyday aesthetics”;

- Aesthetic and conceptual challenges of the city of Lisbon (and comparative studies with other cities).

All submissions will undergo a double-blind review process.

Please send your anonymized paper proposal of max. 400 words including references (max. 5), plus a short biography (max. 200 words, different document), in Portuguese or English to: [email protected]

Papers should be 20 minutes in length, followed by 10 minutes of discussion. Though submissions and communications in Portuguese are accepted, we call your attention to the fact that this is an International Conference and using English can facilitate dialogue between all participants.

APRESENTAÇÃO

A relação entre a estética, as artes e a cidade conheceu novas formas no último século e meio, num processo coincidente quer com o desenvolvimento das metrópoles modernas, quer com o aparecimento de novas tecnologias que têm permitido conhecer, estudar e reinventar a experiência urbana. Além do mais, as cidades desde sempre levantaram questões estéticas fundamentais, relativas aos modos de sentir, percepcionar e habitar, às estruturas espácio-temporais que condicionam a experiência humana, bem como à relação com a natureza e o não- urbano.

O par de conceitos fragmentação e reconfiguração visa orientar as contribuições para a conferência e o modo como ela se propõe desenvolver a relação do pensamento filosófico com a cidade.Esse par de conceitos liga-se com outros que lhe são afins: construção e destruição, fragmento e todo, a singularidade de cada coisa e a tendência teórica para procurar uma síntese abrangente. Propondo como objectivo geral a exploração de tensões criativas e dialécticas entre fragmentação e reconfiguração que sejam capazes de abrir um espaço crítico e diferencial – um espaço de pensamento e de práticas –, esta Conferência Internacional visa explorar as diferentes formas como a experiência humana e as práticas artísticas absorvem e respondem à fragmentação que caracteriza as cidades modernas. Espera-se que este seja também um espaço que permita quebrar as imagens homogéneas das cidades contemporâneas criadas por processos ligados ao capitalismo e à globalização, os quais tantas vezes obscurecem outras formas de vida.

As propostas devem enquadrar-se num dos seguintes temas:

- Temas e autores da filosofia que exploram a dinâmica entre fragmentação e reconfiguração (construção e destruição; fragmento e todo; singularidade e síntese; morfologia) e que possam contribuir para a reflexão sobre o espaço urbano;

- Filosofia da/na cidade – abordagens histórico-filosóficas;

- Existe uma tendência anti-urbana na filosofia?;

- Aspectos filosóficos das dinâmicas de fragmentação e reconfiguração ligadas aos desafios das cidades contemporâneas: ecologia, megalópoles, turismo e gentrificação, natureza e tecnologia, vigilância e segurança, fenómenos de fragmentação social e (des)integração cultural: guetização e multiculturalismo.

- A experiência estética da cidade na sua dimensão perceptiva, sensorial e espácio- temporal;

- Casos de estudo artísticos (arquitectura, literatura, pintura, cinema, fotografia, artes sonoras, etc.) que trabalhem com a fragmentação e reconfiguração da cidade;

- Contribuições de campos filosóficos emergentes como a “estética urbana” e a “estética do quotidiano”;

- Desafios estéticos e conceptuais da cidade de Lisboa (e estudos comparativos com outras cidades).

Todas as propostas de comunicação passarão por um processo de revisão dupla/cega por pares, pelo que deverão ser devidamente anonimizadas. Devem enviar-se para [email protected], em português ou em inglês, e conter um resumo até 400 palavras, incluindo referências bibliográficas (máx. 5), mais uma curta biografia (máx. 200 palavras, documento separado).

As comunicações deverão ter uma duração de 20 minutos, a que se seguirão 10 minutos de discussão.

Tratando-se de uma Conferência Internacional, e embora se aceitem propostas em português, incentivamos a utilização do inglês de modo a facilitar a participação de todos no diálogo.
