Trust in the Digital Age

Center for Law, Ethics and Digital Technologies at Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University with support of Emergency Fellowship at CEU Democracy Institute (DI) in Budapestinvites you to participate in an interdisciplinary web symposium on trust in the digital age.

Today we could observe changes and challenges for trust such as the shift of it from traditional political institutions to corporations and artificial agents, subtle manipulation and erosion democracies. Companies, especially technological corporations, are becoming important actors not only in the private but also in the public arena in the digital age. Artificial agents are becoming subjects of trust that are unreasonably viewed as neutral and impartial, while their influence on people’s opinions and actions is often invisible. Democratic societies are experiencing a trust deficit amid both increased uncertainty and a few successful cases of electoral interference. Non-democratic regimes unlimitedly use digital tools for numerous influences, ranging from the partial suppression of discontented voices to the construction of digital totalitarianism for some communities. Digital tools are used to sow doubts about the veracity of events, including historical ones.

To discuss all this, we scheduled the webinar for 2.5 hours with a 15 minute break to give key speakers time for presentations of up to 20 minutes and questions in the first part (15.00-16.20), as well as speakers with short presentations of up to 10 minutes and discussion in the second part (16.35-17.30).

A brief review based on the results of the webinar, as well as short papers could be published in the first issue of the open access journal Philosophy of law and general theory of law for 2022 (for more details see: http://phtl.nlu.edu.ua/about). The submission of articles to the next two issues of the journal is open to webinar participants until July 31, 2022 and January 31, 2023.
