Dogma and Rationality in Muslim Student Religiosity
Description
This study examines the ideological orientations underlying Muslim students’ religious thought and behavior in two Indonesian cities—Pontianak and Tasikmalaya—through a qualitative, interpretative phenomenological approach. Findings reveal three dominant patterns: theological, aesthetic, and scientific (rational). The theological orientation grounds decisions in scriptural authority and absolute truth-claims, producing strong doctrinal adherence. The aesthetic orientation emphasizes moral beauty, propriety, and the experiential dimensions of religiosity. The scientific orientation prioritizes coherence with reason, empirical evidence, and practical benefit. These orientations shape students’ responses to personal piety, political identity, global Muslim solidarity, and social-environmental activism. Theoretically, the study engages Hans Mol’s concept of sacralization of identity and classical theories of truth, highlighting the plurality of rationalities within a single faith tradition. Philosophically, it argues that intra-faith diversity can be a resource for constructive engagement in plural societies. Educationally, it recommends balanced pedagogies that cultivate doctrinal understanding, moral-aesthetic sensibilities, and critical rationality.
