Normative Guidance Workshop

The Normative Guidance Workshop

To be held at the Australian National University, October 24-25, 2022.

We commonly think that some normative theories, principles, reasons, etc., can guide our actions. But what do we mean by ‘guidance’, and how important is it? The Normative Guidance Workshop aims to make progress on these and related questions.

Some potential topics:

• The role of guidance in a specific normative domain; e.g., morality, epistemology, rationality, decision theory, etc.

• The relationship between guidance and, e.g., oughts, reasons, fittingness relations, options, excuses, responsibility, blameworthiness, virtue, etc.

• The debate between normative internalists and normative externalists.

• Normative ignorance and uncertainty.

• The distinction between a criterion of rightness and a decision procedure.
