Details

The Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IHPST) at the University of Toronto is pleased to announce the call for abstracts for our annual graduate conference. This year our theme is The Written Word. Please see below for details. Submissions are due February 28, 2023 to [email protected]

Written communication is a vital component of how knowledge is spread. Literature, in every sense of the word, plays an important role in the production, circulation, and application of knowledge in science, medicine, and technology. How is knowledge disseminated within and beyond the limits of individual disciplines and to whom? What skills are required to effectively communicate with an intended audience? Does fiction have a place in the discussion of and reaction to advances in science? We welcome proposals from graduate scholars in history, philosophy, and any other discipline whose work relates to the theme.

The IHPST conference will take place on Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6, 2023. We will be running the conference hybrid, and though there is no conference fee, we are unable to cover travel or accommodation costs. Proposals should be about 250 words and please specify whether you would like to attend virtually or on-site in Toronto. Clearly state the main argument of the presentation and how it connects with the topic of literature in the history or philosophy of science, medicine, or technology. Presentations not related to the theme will also be considered. Proposals are due by February 28, 2023 and can be sent to [email protected] We intend to respond to all proposals by March 31, 2023.
