RECONCEIVING PERCEPTION, Antwerp, May 15- 16
Representational approaches to Perception have dominated the debate in Philosophy of Perception for the past few decades, but the tides might be changing. In Philosophy of Perception, as well as in many other branches of Philosophy of Mind, the representational hegemony is increasingly getting challenged by a variety of relational, pragmatic and embodied approaches. The aim of this conference is to bring together these approaches in order to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of pragmatic and relational Philosophies of Perception.
What concept of perception is emerging from these proposals? How can these views account for the possibility of puzzling phenomena such as illusions, hallucinations or aspect-seeing? What are the metaphysical implications of characterizing perception as the interrelation between a perceiving organism and an environment? What role do action and attention play in such views? How can a relational and pragmatic view of perception account for the connection of perception with thought and belief? Which understanding of thought and language are those views compatible with?
The conference will offer the opportunity to engage with these, as well as others relevant questions. Besides invited presentations (see list below), the conference program has room for contributed presentations. Please send a 250-500 word abstract to [email protected], with as title “Reconceiving Perception” before the 31st of January 2023. Notification of acceptance will be communicated at the latest on the 16th of February 2023. A small fee of 70 Euro’s will be charged for participation in the conference. The fee includes a ticket for the Conference Barbeque on May 16.
