The 16th Conference of the International Society for Utilitarian Studies will take place on Wednesday July, 5th to Friday, July, 7th, at Luiss University Rome.
In the eighteenth century, Utilitarianism emerged as a comprehensive and timely philosophy aimed at dealing with the most urgent issues of the day. Utilitarians continue to have this aim today. ISUS 2023 will provide a venue to assess Utilitarianism's contribution to the role of philosophers in addressing urgent issues across history and in the present time.
The conference will accept papers on all subjects related to the study of Utilitarianism, as well as papers proposed for inclusion in the following panels:
· Utilitarianism and democracy (R.E. Goodin will be present at this panel)
· Utilitarianism and climate ethics
· Utilitarianism and longtermism
· Utilitarianism and global distributive justice
· Utilitarianism and war
· Utilitarianism and animal ethics
· Utilitarianism and Peter Singer
Please send your c. 400-word paper proposal to [email protected]. If you would like your paper to be considered for one of the above panels, please include the name of the panel in the subject line of your email. The proposal deadline is 28 February 2023, with responses by mid-March.
