CFP: Minds, Persons, and Cosmos

The HPP and its partners invite applications, and papers for its 2023 study week, ‘Minds, Persons and Cosmos’. This event will comprise a three-day workshop from 31 August to 2 September and two-day conference from 4 to 5 September at the Hotel Sveti Križ, Trogir, Croatia, a short journey from the UNESCO World Heritage Sites at Trogir and Split. 

The workshop will include classes delivered by:

• Dr Alin Christoph Cucu (University of Lausanne)
• Prof. Benedikt Göcke (Ruhr University Bochum)
• Dr Brian Pitts (University of Lincoln)
• Dr Ralph Weir (University of Lincoln, University of Oxford)

The conference will include keynote talks by:

• Prof. Ana Dimiskovska (St. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje)
• Prof. Uwe Meixner (University of Regensburg)
• Prof. John Cottingham (University of Reading)

Workshop classes will be aimed at senior undergraduates and graduate students. Classes and talks will be delivered in English.

Participation and Paper Submissions

Students are invited to attend both the workshop and conference or the workshop only. Researchers (including graduate students) are invited to deliver papers at the conference. Applications should be sent by 31 May 2023 to [email protected]. Please indicate in the subject line whether you wish to take part in:

1. Minds, Persons, and Cosmos Workshop; 2. Minds, Persons, and Cosmos Conference; or 3. Minds, Persons, and Cosmos Workshop and Conference. 

Applicants should provide, in a separate document: name, status/title, institution, curriculum vitae, contact address, emailand phone number. Those who wish to deliver papers at the conference should provide a title and 250-300word abstract.

A registration fee of 450 euros for the workshop and 300 euros for the conference will cover organisational costs, meals, and accommodation.

Study Week Theme: 

Workshop sessions and papers will focus on issues at the intersection of science, philosophy, and theology respecting the place of minds and persons in the cosmos. Relevant topics include the nature of persons, the mind-body problem, free will, personal identity, cognitive science of religion, and the relationship between religion and natural history. Titles of talks and specific workshop themes will be advertised in due course. 

This event is a part of the Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion's project, New Horizons for Science and Religion in Central and Eastern Europe, funded by the John Templeton Foundation. It is hosted with the collaboration and support of the Humane Philosophy Project, the University of Warsaw and the University of Zagreb.
