Description: Individual differences in perceptual experience are likely universal, just as individual differences in external appearance are universal. I’ll start by introducing the concept of ‘perceptual diversity’ and distinguishing it from the established concept of ‘neurodiversity’. I’ll then summarise some work examining perceptual diversity in situations ranging from synaesthesia to the rubber hand illusion, discussing some potential underlying factors. I’ll describe The Perception Census (https://perceptioncensus.dreamachine.world/) – a large-scale citizen-science project that is aiming to provide a unique open-access data resource for research into perceptual diversity across many different perceptual dimensions. Finally, I will introduce Dreamachine (https://dreamachine.world/) – a recent art-science immersive experience using stroboscopic light to induce individually unique perceptual hallucinations in groups of people.
