Early Career Researchers (defined as anyone who has either not yet received their PhD, or received it in 2018 or later) are invited to submit abstracts for a workshop to be held in the London School of Economics and Political Science 16-17 April, 2024.

The workshop will provide a venue for early career scholars both to receive extensive feedback on work in progress and to engage in informal discussion leading to potential future collaborative projects. We will make room for extensive discussion on each talk, plus ample unstructured time for informal discussion and activities in central London.

Topics may include any issue in or closely connected to animal minds, including issues in philosophy of mind, ethics, philosophy of cognitive science/psychology/neuroscience/biology. Non-philosophers doing empirical work within comparative psychology, animal welfare science etc. who might benefit from discussion with philosophers are warmly encouraged to submit abstracts.

500 word abstracts should be submitted as a pdf prepared for blind review, emailed to [email protected], with the subject heading “LSE ECR Workshop Abstract”, by January 16th. The body of the email should include any institutional affiliations and the year of your PhD.  Decisions will be sent by February 16th.

Attendance will be free, but we will ask attendees to register (details to follow) to ensure we have enough capacity.

Thanks to funding generously provided by PAMBA ( and York University (Toronto), we will be able to provide funds to help with the costs of attendance for some of the attendees.

Organizers: Simon Brown, Jonathan Birch, Andrew Crump, Katariina Hynninen, eva read, Daria Zakharova
