We from the Duquesne Graduate Students in Philosophy are excited to invite you to our 2024 annual conference. This year’s theme is Being and Crime.
As far back as the trials of Anaxagoras, Socrates, and Boethius, philosophy has situated itself in relation to the law. The figure of a condemned Socrates is connected to various images of the philosopher: as the victim of unjust laws, as an ethicist defiantly rejecting the law, or as the philosopher-as-detective, to name a few.
But what is the relationship of philosophy to crime? And, by extension, to the law and the carceral system? Do philosophical and criminal investigations relate to one another? Do they pursue different kinds of truth? What is philosophy’s obligation to those who live outside the bounds of the law - the outlaw, the lumpenproletariat, the unhoused, the refugee? And what use is philosophy to them?
Several influential philosophers throughout history have been accused of crimes, served time, even learned and wrote philosophy from prison, from Boethius to Antonio Gramsci, Malcolm X, Angela Y. Davis, and George Jackson. What can we learn about how to do philosophy (and whom to do it for) from these thinkers and their experiences? We invite proposals on the following topics:
