The Center for the Study of Scottish Philosophy (CSSP) invites submissions for a pre-read workshop on the Philosophical Writings of Scottish Women. The workshop will be held on November 2, 2024 at the Lincoln Center campus of Fordham University, in New York City. Our goal is to support the research being done on figures like Mary Shepherd, while also introducing philosophers to writers like Joanna Baillie, Mary Brunton, Elizabeth Hamilton, Jean Marishall, Margaret Oliphant, and Frances Wright, in the hope of encouraging further interest in the intellectual and philosophical contributions of Scottish women.
The workshop will feature invited papers from Deborah Boyle (College of Charleston), JoEllen DeLucia (Central Michigan University), and Don Garrett (NYU). There are also two slots open for which we are soliciting submissions of anonymized abstracts of about 500 words. If selected, participants should be prepared to share a draft paper by October 1, 2024, and to read closely the drafts of two other participants. Participants will be encouraged to submit revised versions of their papers for consideration in a 2025 special issue of the Journal of Scottish Philosophy.
Submissions should be sent as an anonymized pdf file to Lauren Kopajtic at [email protected] and must be received by August 1, 2024 for consideration.
