Expressive meaning and Hate speech online workshop

We're delighted to announce the ‘Expressive meaning and Hate speech’ online workshop that will take place on August 12th and 13th via Zoom Meeting.

The workshop is kindly co-organized by the TALk Group (IIF/SADAF/CONICET) and the Center of Logic Epistemology and History of Science (CLE/UNICAMP).

Workshop Description

Hate speech can take many forms. Perhaps the most notorious one is as speech that includes expressively loaded words – i.e., words that convey emotional attitudes on the part of the speaker – like slurs and epithets, which are potent tools to transmit rage and resentment and to cause harm. Other forms comprise the spreading of misinformation and the exercise of communicative injustices that exclude targets and erode democratic ideals. In this workshop we aim to dive into issues related to the harmfulness of hateful and manipulative language, such as:

• The expressive dimension of language;

• Silencing, distortions and other communicative injustices;

• Hate speech in the digital era;

• How to mitigate hate speech: regulation and “more speech”
