Abstract: Aristotle’s philosophy was the basis for the medieval university curriculum throughout the western world, as well as for higher education in the Islamic medieval period. This dominance was not, however, uncontested, and early modern thinkers began to disparage and eventually reject the highly technical “philosophy of the schools”. But, in the later part of the twentieth century, Aristotelian philosophy began an incredible come-back, first in newly developed theories of ethics and political philosophy, and then in highly influential and popular theories of metaphysics. After providing insight into these new Aristotelian-inspired philosophical movements, I will offer some explanation for the rise in relevance and popularity of Aristotle’s thought in the twenty-first century.
