CfP: Revisiting the Origins of Contemporary Philosophy of Memory

Today, the philosophy of memory is an established area of academic research in philosophy. However, just ten years ago, it was rare for researchers to identify themselves as philosophers of memory. Few events, publications, and research centers focused on the philosophy of memory. Today, the situation is completely changed. What made the difference? It is hard to pinpoint a single event that triggered the plethora of debates and contributions. Still, we can point to two sources that opened conceptual space for current days' causalist and simulationist theories of memory: Sven Bernecker's book Memory (Oxford University Press, 2010), and Felipe De Brigard's "Is Memory for Remembering?" (Synthese 191 (2): 155–85). Considering these two sources as landmarks, the journal RHV. An International Journal of Philosophy invites the community to describe and evaluate the development of the philosophy of memory over the past decade.

RHV invites the submission of papers for the Monographic Section. Here are some potential topics for consideration:

  • Is remembering a form of mental time travel?
  • Is remembering a way of imagining?
  • What constitutes the feeling of pastness?
  • What is the nature of mnemonic confabulation?
  • Is memory a form of episodic hypothetical thinking?
  • Is remembering a way of knowing the past?
  • Are memory beliefs immune to error through misidentification?
  • Why do we remember?
  • Do memory traces have content?
  • Is remembering a way of predicting the past?

We welcome papers from various perspectives within philosophy, cognitive sciences, and related disciplines.

Submission deadline: March 31, 2025

Publication: November 2025
