Hegel considered the medieval dispute between realists and nominalists to be of fundamental importance for philosophy and logic. In the Lectures on the History of Philosophy, he interprets it in terms of the opposition between the universal and the individual. I argue that Hegel’s treatment of the controversy opens up a new and ingenious way to think about the philosophical bases of logic.
