We invite applications for participation at the European Campus of Excellence (ECE) Summer School on Memory and Mind: an interdisciplinary course, integrating the fields of philosophy, neuroscience, psychology, computer science and medicine. Deadline: 20 April 2014.

Course description:

The demands on young researchers in philosophy and the cognitive and neurosciences have increased dramatically during the last decade. Whereas many philosophers need to understand state-of-the-art empirical research in the cognitive and neurosciences, empirical scientists often face conceptual challenges which require philosophical knowledge and excellent analytical skills. From 7 Sept – 20 Sept 2014, the European Campus of Excellence Summer School will be held at the Ruhr University Bochum, taking a truly integrative approach to contemporary problems in the areas of memory and mind. Gifted students from all over Europe meet with world-class scholars from all over the world to learn from each other, talk about and conduct research together. The young academics not only get the opportunity to deepen their knowledge on questions of memory and mind, but also to get to know fellow students from other European universities. The summer school in Bochum is divided into four subsequent theoretical as well as four partly parallel experimental sections. Each theoretical section is dedicated to one research topic on the structure of memory and mind:

T1: Perception and Memory
T2: Emergence and Fate of the Memory Trace
T3: Sleep, Dream, Memory
T4: Emotion and Semantic Memory

During four days, the students will put the newly acquired information into practice in hands-on experimental sessions.

E1: Neuronal Correlates of Recollection and Familiarity. An fMRI Investigation
E2: Behavioral and Molecular Correlates of Memory Function
E3: Computational Models of Associative Memory
E4: ERP Measurement and Semantic Comprehension

Additionally, the participants have the opportunity to present their own research and get feedback from eminent scholars.

Participation quota:

30 students performing studies at European universities (EU countries, Norway, Switzerland) or students studying outside Europe and holding European citizenship. We also encourage applications from Turkey and Israel. The summer school addresses students of philosophy and the cognitive and neurosciences. It is open to Master & PhD students, as well as students at an advanced BA level (3rd year).

Scholarships:

We are committed to admitting talented students from diverse backgrounds. Accepted applicants will receive a scholarship: tuition will be waived completely; travel expenses, lodging and food will be mostly covered.

Application:

The online application period for this summer school will be closed on 20 April 2014.
